Prehistoric to Medieval period

For millennia humans have changed the physical appearance of the urban and rural landscape.  Over three terms we will consider these adaptations from prehistoric monuments, Neolithic farming, the desertion of medieval settlements and how our great manorial estates evolved. Garden landscape design, the picturesque movement and the effect of rails and canals will feature, together with the military fortifications of the Second World War. Using local and national examples, focus will also be given to contested landscapes – trespass, national parks, riots, rallies and conflict.  There will an opportunity to discuss what landscape means to you and visit some local sites.
